As a follow-up to the things you're not supposed to notice, it also struck me that American girls are forever on diets. Not necessarily ones with specific names (they do occasionally make appearances, but usually among middle aged women as opposed to the current Gen Y), but the concept of watching what they eat quite closely in some form or another. Nearly every American girl knows what it's like to deprive herself quite significantly, generally for a certain length of time, in order to lose weight. She knows that that dessert does make a difference, and precisely where she'll see it stored.
Australians certainly do diet as well, but, well, the only two I currently know on diets are both male. Go figure. (Pun intended.)
