quicko: the ABC
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation. I don't think it actually comes in at my place (the TV is a confusing machine, full of complexity and ambiguity. I generally let it show me whatever it wants, but if it's not Big Bang Theory I turn it off.), but it's one of those channels I think I'd actually watch a bit of if I could find it. It's kind of along the lines of PBS, but without such an emphasis on kids. Or maybe it does cater to them during the day, I wouldn't really know ...

ABC iview is the online catch up for the ABC. I know for my ISP it is free to view, so costs me nothing. I love the ABC. It's definitely the best channel, and has all the BBC stuff too, so doubly good.
Oh- my first recommendation is a show called "Miranda". They just started showing Series 2 again. There are only 2 series out so far, but a third should screen very soon. It's a BBC show.
After that try something like Gruen Planet. Australian Story is also a favourite.
The ABC is where you'll find informative news and most BBC programmes. The only ads it has are for its own programs and spin-offs (e.g. DVD box sets, CDs, toy merchandise related to shows on their station).
We rarely watch any other station (some movies would be the main attractor). After all, before we acquired a TV in 2010, we hadn't owned one for 7 years - before free-to-air digital came in - so we feel rather spoilt for choice even with just the ABC. Unfortunately, there are some things we'd like to watch on the ABC's sister stations of SBS but our antennae doesn't pick it up properly.
The ABC has 4 TV stations, one of which is particularly aimed at kids and doesn't broadcast 24/7. It also has what seems like a bazillion radio stations but is really just several national ones (broadcast on different frequencies in different parts of the country) plus many local ones that are differently 'flavoured' according to region. These are the ones that are most useful in times of a natural disaster.
