I'm in my mid-thirties and was born in Australia to Australian parents so I'm well and truly Australian. I have spent most of my life here and I have spent most of my professional career here.

I now get asked to bring along to job interviews, proof that I'm eligible to work in Australia.

I know the potential employer is covering their legal backside by making it a routine question but I would have thought that, if I weren't eligible, it would have been picked up sometime in the last oh, 13 or so years of my professional career.

Yes! It's true - even at your humble Blockbuster video store!! This is not the case in The States?

Hmmm, I guess it could be for non-residents and I'd never have known. They probably asked for my driver's license, which I of course would have had, having driven there, and it never entered my head to think anything more of it. It's only when you're a visitor you start to realize some of these things I think!
