quicko: darlin'

Not all, but some, Australian guys have "darlin' " built into their vocabulary. It just pops out at the end of every phrase when they talk to a female. Sometimes it switches to "sweetheart" or occasionally "love," but something just always escapes. Like a Southern waitress calling all men "honey," it's not really meant as anything ... but it certainly doesn't hurt!

Enjoy the genteel terminology while you can; in the US men are more cognizant of the possibility of being slapped with a sexual harassment suit.

Oh, we're plenty cognizant.

Kim, where the hell have you been hanging out? The only Australian men I've ever heard do this are bartenders in poorly scripted Australian drama. And they avoid sexual harrassment suits by employing the old "I'm fictional" defense.

Ouch! Okay, perhaps this one is a bit of a stretch ... I'm afraid I must admit I got the idea mostly from Jason on So You Think You Can Dance ... but also from my Kiwi surf instructor ... and a couple gay guys.
