quicko: slice

Slice, Australians will argue, is an entity entirely different from a cake, much as you think "apricot slice" sounds like "a slice of the fruit apricot" instead of "a short, dense, sweet apricot-flavored bread that highly resembles a cake."  It's in the family of zucchini bread, banana bread or even, one might be tempted to think, carrot cake.  This, of course, would be wrong, seeing as slice is anything but cake.  It's certainly not a brownie, as there is no chocolate involved, and it's not even close to being a pastry or a pie, but, really, you could call it any of those things and you'd be much closer to getting an approving Australian nod than should you have the misfortune to call it a cake.

Slice - generally has a solid base (biscuit / compacted rolled oats / stiff pastry) with some sort of sweet topping. Slice is also normally no more than about an inch thick, unless it's a tall vanilla slice.

Cake is far too light and fluffy to qualify as slice...unless it's fruit cake, which doesn't need extra support anyway. :-)
