quicko: divorce
I'm told that, in Australian law, you cannot be granted an immediate divorce but must instead wait for a period of 9 to 12 months and attempt to reconcile.

I'm not an expert, but I think you need to have a year of "separation" before you can file.
You have to have lived separately and apart for at least 12 months with no reasonable likelihood of resuming married life. Interestingly, you don't have to live in separate accommodation to have lived separately and apart.
Of course, you also can't marry a person on the day you meet them here either.
Before you marry, you fill out some paperwork (pick up the Notice of Intended Marriage form from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry office; each partner fills out their respective sections and signs it in front of a qualified witness; then lodge it with your authorised celebrant) then you have to wait a month and a day before you can tie the knot. If you leave it for more than 18 months, the form lapses and you have to fill it in again (they may waive the month wait at that point, not sure).
