I think we'd just call them hand towels or dish towels or dish cloths; here they get their own special function!

Mom said...: The old American tea towels tended to be of a particular, more linen-like type of fabric, rather than terrycloth. I think as the majority of Wal-Mart type wipers became more the norm, the really good cloths, along with their name and function, went by the wayside.
