quicko: pantyhose
I rather amused my friends the other night by lamenting the fact I'd got a run in my pantyhose -- they call them stockings, which rather amuses me.

And am I correct in remembering that they also call the runs "ladders" or something like that? So your run in your pantyhose would be their ladder in their stockings, right?
Actually, until sometime within the early years of your lifetime, we also referred to them as stockings. Hoisery is not unheard of, either; hence pantyhose is hoisery with panites attached, a relatively new development as well.
Nylon stockings is what are referred to here, as opposed to wool stockings or silk stockings. Hence, the term Nylons also applies to this type of hose.
