But isn't it the same with words like "new"? That's just how we (and much of the English-speaking world) pronounce a long "u" sound.
I'm sure you've heard them say, "Adidas," right? First time I heard it, I had to ask the person to repeat it and finally to spell it because I couldn't figure out what he was saying.
Ah, that's because we like dipthongs and you don't. :-)
