quicko: the industry
One of my bigger Australian pet peeves. People are forever talking about The Industry -- whichever one they happen to be in. And many of them -- education, say -- are not areas I'd typically consider industrial. Drives me crazy -- and it's incredibly over-used.

Ha ha! Yes, I say that too! Shall try to refrain from now on!
On the basis that industry produces an economic good or service, the use is legitimate. However, if you want people to use some other term you need to suggest one that won't "get up your nose"; how about "sector"?
