quicko: conspicuous by their absence

It seems it has taken me well over two years to piece together the fact that Australian landscape is crucially different from American: they have no fire hydrants.

"Fire?" asked my Australian friend. "What's that? We don't have fires in Australia."

Nonsense.

Now that I think about it, I didn't see any in North Sydney, but we definitely have them. I distinctly remember being trained not to park in front of them. They don't look like the American ones from TV; they're basically just a post with a giant tap on top.

Often you won't see the tap at all because it is in the ground with a metal plate over it like the valves used to turn the water off so that repairs can be done.

Evidently your said Australian friend was out of the country in February 2009 and has never seen a house burn down.

Errr, don't worry, I'm pretty sure it was sarcasm from the Australian friend!

OK - that makes a lot more sense. :-)
