quicko: christmas carols or not
I had a terrible discovery here: it was the first Sunday after Thanksgiving, and I went to church, all set for O Come, All Ye Faithful and Go Tell It on the Mountain, only to learn that Australians don't sing Christmas carols until Christmas!!

Not universally true. Some churches will start with the carols from the first Sunday in Advent, which I guess was yesterday. CBTB isn't a big one for observing the liturgical calendar, but I'll bet in the more traditional congregations they were singing Veni Emmanuel with gusto.
They probably sing Advent songs, though, don't they, like O Come, O Come Emmanuel? That is how you would find it in your Lutheran Grandparents' church.
