quicko: the definitive dictionary
While I am naturally partial to Webster's dictionary, the British favor the OED (the Oxford English Dictionary) and the Australians, I have just learned, prefer the Macquarie Dictionary. (Which, for the record, is the only word thus far in this blog post that receives the red squiggly line of linguistic discontent.) I haven't, as of yet, spent much time in the Macquarie, though I discovered it is the official dictionary of Australian English and have now (oh, the excitement!) taken out a free, 30-day trial of it. (Otherwise, it is very wary of letting you use it online at all. I will here restrain from any further comments, which I think is really rather generous of me.)
