Not known in Australia! I spent ages trying to ask the man at Coles
(who wasn't exactly fluent at the best of times) if they had any
off-brand Tobasco sauce. He didn't have a clue what I was after, and
was convinced he'd solved everything by showing me the Tobasco sauce.
Eventually I worked out that "home brand" is the Australian term, though "Coles brand" will suffice if you're in Coles.
ps -- there is no off-brand Tobasco sauce.

Yes Mom - we also use 'generic'.
Quite a few of us know the term 'off-brand'. Maybe you just struck someone who's grasp of English wasn't the best.
