I was walking through the grocery store today when I made an astounding discovery: the eggs were not refrigerated. They were out in the open, sitting between the vegetables and the bread, with nothing to keep them cool. Lots of them. Practically boiling. Clambering to fry themselves on the nearby sidewalk. As I said, I was astounded.
Which just goes to show, you shouldn't put all your eggs in the refrigerated basket.

I had a roommate in college who ate a ton of eggs. She kept them in her closet. The impression that I am getting is that Americans are germ-a-phobes. With eggs, leaving them out doesn't seem too illogical to me. The way things can carry nasty killer germs and what-not is through exposure. Eggs themselves ARE a sealed container. In regards to other processed foods, ketchup, salsa, pickles... I, being the messy flaky person that I am, often leave these items out for days with no issues and I've yet to end up with food poisoning (knock on wood). Also, Kraft singles require no refrigeration. Don't worry about me though. I do keep the meat, milk and mayo consistently in the fridge.

sounds like everywhere else in the world. i remember, though, being shocked the first time i bought eggs in japan that they were all sitting out in a big stack in the middle of the produce section. underneath all the giant, smoked salmon hanging from the ceiling....
ah, adventures in grocery shopping.
Since chickens typically do not live in air conditioning, I guess it does make sense to allow the eggs to remain out in the open, too. I suppose they just have to be sold and eaten in a more timely manner. Then again, I am no eggs-pert.
