quicko: A4

They have a very odd way of specifying paper here. Instead of tackling the inches (8 1/2 by 11) or even, I am prepared to grant, the centimeters, they change the size (it's not 8 1/2 by 11) and call it ... you'll never guess, unless you read the title here ... A4. A3 is a bigger poster size, and A5 is smaller. There's some B-somethings, too, but I haven't quite figured out what they are yet.

Oh I'm totally with you on the paper size thing - I've been asked several times what A4 was by American folk - silly me I thought it was a
"universal standard of measurement"! I think it's ONLY in Oz we say that!

I came across A4 and A3 in London, too, but I can't speak for the rest of the world ...

A4 paper size has been around for many years. I 1st encountered it in the early 90's and since I am not what you'd call a "1st to know" type of person, I am sure it has been there for a long time before.

A4 = 210 mm x 297 mm
A3 = 297 mm x 420 mm
A2 = 420 mm x 594 mm
A1 = 594 mm x 840 mm

A5 = 148.5 mm x 210 mm

The ratio is 1:square root of 2. That way you will have the same proportions if you cut it in half sideways (as opposed to lengthways).
