Asked another Australian what a matilda was.  The answer?  "I forget."

    According to Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waltzing_Matilda, a Matilda is a bag with one's belongings in, slung over the shoulder and carried on the back when traveling by foot.
