Most CBD here have bans on semi-trailers travelling through them unless its for a local delivery. It would have to be an extreme case to need something bigger than a local delivery truck (medium to heavy rigid vehicle).
But yes, go into the countryside or up the highway and you'll see them aplenty. In fact, if you go to the more remote areas (e.g. western Queensland and NT) you may see a road-train - Australia apparently has the largest and heaviest road-legal vehicles according to Wikipedia.
