It seems that, while the Australians are clearly missing the second s in "sports," they take it upon themselves to reinsert it into the vocabulary at "maths."

We use "sports" when we're talking about different types of sport e.g. "Sports Day" is a school's track and field competition day or their regular day for inter-school sports competitions.
We say "maths" because the full word has an "s" on the end. Shshsh, don't mention apostrophes in the written version; you know how bad native English speakers are with those. :-)
